The Naltar Ski Expedition offers an unforgettable ski adventure in one of Pakistan’s most scenic alpine regions. Located near Gilgit in Gilgit-Baltistan, Naltar Valley is renowned for its deep powder snow, high-altitude terrain, and dramatic Karakoram landscapes. This expedition combines road travel along the Karakoram Highway with guided ski touring in pristine backcountry zones around Naltar Bala and Naltar Payeen. Designed for skiers seeking both adventure and cultural immersion, the trip begins and ends in Islamabad and provides a balanced mix of skiing, acclimatization, and exploration of northern Pakistan’s mountain life.
The Naltar ski expedition offers an unforgettable adventure in one of Pakistan’s most scenic alpine regions. Located just a short jeep drive from Gilgit, the Naltar Valley is widely considered the premier destination for skiing in the Karakoram. Known for its lush forests and strikingly blue lakes in summer, winter transforms this valley into a sanctuary for deep powder and high-altitude touring.
This 12-day Naltar ski program is designed for skiers seeking a blend of challenging backcountry lines and authentic cultural immersion. From the initial practice runs near Naltar Bala to exploring the high-altitude alpine bowls, this expedition provides a comprehensive mountain experience. Whether you are skinning through pine-forested slopes or descending open glaciers, Naltar offers a variety of terrain that rivals the best ski destinations in the world.
How difficult is the Naltar ski expedition? This expedition is graded as Strenuous. While the terrain is accessible, the combination of high altitude and backcountry navigation requires a high level of physical fitness and prior skiing experience.
The Naltar ski environment is characterized by glaciated slopes and high-alpine snowfields. Participants should be comfortable skiing in off-piste conditions, including deep powder, crust, and wind-blown snow. Avalanche safety training is provided, but previous experience with backcountry gear (skins, beacons) is highly recommended.
Acclimatization is built into the first few days of the tour, with orientation and practice runs to help you adjust to the thin mountain air.
